In the 19th Century London was a massive figurehead in politics, trade and finance; later rivaled in the century by New York and Paris. It was both a wealthy and extremely poor area of England; it was overcrowded due to a large degree of immigrants moving to the city, the slums were very unsantiy as a result as well. However regardless of this, it didn't stop the city from making massive steps in history; having finally made an underground sewage system, dropping the high death count and cholera cases; Most of the famous buildings standing today were constructed in the Victorian era, eg: Big ben, Houses of Parliment.
The railway was also constructed during this age, allowing people of various social standings to be able to commute to the centre of London; later on in this century the famous London Underground's first lines were constructed.
This time period bears great relavence to the position I wanted to main character to hold as a police officer; the Metropolitan police was formed in the 19th Century by the Prime minister, Robert Peel. Crime was rife during this time, it was congested and the slums were stuck in a stated of despair; one note noteable and infamous of crimes was the 'Jack the ripper' case; along with 'Amelia Dyer' not long after.
